Who We Are

Hugo Hayes

BPsych (Hons), MClinPsych

Hello, I’m Hugo. I’m a registered psychologist based on Bundjalung Country - Northern Rivers, NSW.

I was drawn to psychology by a desire to better understand myself and to help others do the same. Being human can be confusing and painful at times. I believe that when we slow down, observe our patterns and experiences, and try new ways of responding, important change becomes possible.

A key goal in my work is to ensure that you feel heard, understood and safe to explore your difficulties. I also balance this with the belief that good therapy should move somewhere. It should challenge you, help you recognise unhelpful patterns, create insight, and turn that insight into meaningful action.

My approach is formulation-driven and evidence-based. My training was predominantly in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and I continue to develop skills in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). I have experience in acute and sub-acute inpatient wards, community mental health treatment and in a specialist eating disorder service, as well as working with disability and complex behaviour. Mostly I work with adults and adolescents experiencing mood disorders (i.e. depression), anxiety disorders (i.e., generalised anxiety, social anxiety and phobias of various types), obsessive compulsive disorder, trauma and stressor-related disorders and insomnia.

I also offer cognitive and diagnostic assessments where helpful, including assessment of intellectual functioning, academic skills or learning difficulties, social concerns or specific queries such as ADHD or Autism.

Before becoming a psychologist, I worked for over a decade in the music industry as an audio engineer and producer. Outside of work, I enjoy time with family and friends, being terrible at Brazilian Jui Jitsu, and continuing to learn.
